By visiting www.irs.gov/refunds you can check your refund status within 24 hours after you e-filed return is received, or about a month after mailing your paper return. Michigan Tax Refunds
If you are expecting a Michigan tax refund, the state recommends you wait at least 2 weeks from when you e-filed state return, of 6 weeks from when you mailed a paper tax return, before checking the status of the return on www.michigan.gov/taxes/iit/refund. You will need correctly input the primary taxpayer’s Social Security Number, the primary taxpayer’s last name, the tax year, your tax filing status for the year, and the Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) listed on the tax return.
Local Tax Refunds
If you are expecting a refund from a city or other locality, the best way to inquire about your tax refund status is to search the city website for information. While some cities may have online portals, many others will require you to call their Income Tax Department to inquire about the status of your return. Make sure to have a copy of your tax return in front of when you make this call, as the representative will likely ask you to provide ask information from the return to verify your identity.
